On Friday, it was announced that a Dublin, California man had been sentenced to prison for filing a false tax return. 60-year-old Shiv D. Kumar has been sentenced to 30 months in prison. Documents filed with the court explain that Kumar was the sole shareholder and president of A-Paratransit Inc. The company was responsible for providing transportation services to disabled consumers.

Kumar filed false corporate tax returns with the IRS for the 2009 and 2010 tax years. Those returns underreported the company’s gross receipts by $2,229,216 and $2,412,435. In total, Kumar caused a tax loss of $1,584,055. The defendant deposited business receipts into three bank accounts, which were held by different banks.

Kumar concealed his true income by only providing his accountant with information regarding two of the accounts. Then, Kumar utilized the funds for personal expenditures, such as buying property in the Vallejo, California area. In addition to 30 months in prison, Kumar has also been sentenced to one year of supervised release.

Total restitution owed will be decided at a later date.
