On Monday, United States Attorney Tom Beall announced that a former Kansas CPA had pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return. 69-year-old Robert M. Purinton formerly of Overland Park, Kansas pleaded guilty to a single count of making a false statement on his 2009 tax return by under reporting his income by roughly $202,000.

The defendant, who now resides in Rancho Mirage, California, has agreed to pay restitution of $71,543 for the additional taxes due and owing for that year. He will also make restitution of $34,512 for 2010, despite not pleading guilty to any criminal activity for that year. During that time period, Purinton served as a CPA with an accounting firm in Overland Park.

A sentencing date for the defendant will be set after his presentence report is completed. At the time of his sentencing, Purinton will face a maximum penalty of three years in federal prison and a possible maximum fine of $250,000. Additional details can be found here.
