On September 18, 2017, Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song announced that a resident of Hazlet, New Jersey had pleaded guilty to health care fraud. 31-year-old Dr. Vincent J. Gamuzza pleaded guilty to a single count before Judge Cathy Bissoon. Gamuzza, who is an optometrist, confirmed that he operated several vision centers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He also admitted that he was responsible for handing the billing to insurance companies, including Highmark Inc. and Davis Vision.

The defendant admitted that he submitted fraudulent claims to Highmark for services that were never provided between December 2015 and July 2016. He also admitted to impermissibly submitting claims for the same services to Davis Vision and Highmark Inc.

The judge has scheduled Gamuzza to be sentenced on January 23, 2018 at 2:15 PM. The defendant is facing a maximum of 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
