On Monday, 56-year-old Edward Padilla of Bakersfield, California was sentenced to 21 months in prison for embezzlement of union funds. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert. Judge Lawrence J. O’Neill has also ordered Padilla to pay the union $168,780.22 in restitution.

According to documents in the case, Padilla worked as the Secretary Treasurer/Business Manager at the Bakersfield office of a construction workers’ union. From September 2012 to December 31, 2014, Padilla embezzled roughly $168,780.22 from the union through unearned salary checks, unapproved sick leave payments, and personal expenses on his union credit cards.

The investigation was conducted by the United States Department of Labor Office of Labor-Management Standards. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Angela Scott.
