On Monday, November 6, 2017, it was announced that a Rolla, Missouri woman had been sentenced to 15 months in prison for fraudulently using her employer’s debit card for her own personal gain. Denise Rea Barner will also be required to pay $125,576.80 in restitution to the victim. Court documents explain that from July 1991 to February 25, 2017, Barner worked at the Robert L. Kyle Center Home for Semi-Independent Living Inc.

Around November of 2004, Barner was named as a “Director” and she took over general accounting duties. Beginning in or around November 2007 and ending in February 2016, Barner fraudulently used the Robert L. Kyle Center’s debit cards to make unauthorized personal purchases and ATM withdrawals.

As a result of Barner’s actions, the center sustained a loss of between $95,000 and $150,000. 54-year-old Denise Rea Barner pleaded guilty to one felony count of access device fraud in July. Again, the defendant has been sentenced to 15 months in the Federal Bureau of Prisons for her actions. More details can be found here.
