This week, it was announced that a 56-year-old attorney from Allentown, Pennsylvania had been sentenced to prison for tax fraud. Douglas M. Marinos was sentenced to one year in federal prison. The defendant pleaded guilty to a single count of willfully failing to collect, truthfully account for and pay over to the United States taxes owed by his Allentown law firm on January 18, 2018. The defendant was sentenced by United States District Judge Jeffrey L. Schmehl.
Marinos misrepresented to his employees that money he had withheld from their paychecks had been paid to the Internal Revenue Service to fund their Medicare and Social Security contributions from 2008 to 2015. In total, the defendant failed to pay $229,548.92 in required payroll taxes on behalf of his law firm. Further details have been made available here.
