Durham, North Carolina Tax Return Preparer Gets Prison Time For Filing Fraudulent Tax Returns

On Thursday, November 16, 2017, it was announced that a former Durham, North Carolina tax return preparer had been sentenced to prison for aiding and assisting in the preparation of fraudulent income tax returns. Maria Streater was sentenced to 24 months in prison. Court documents show that Maria Streater worked for KEF Professional Tax Services, which is a tax preparation business in Durham.

From 2012 to 2014, Streater prepared fraudulent returns for clients by using false sources of income to maximize the earned income credit and to help clients get refunds to which they were entitled. The defendant ultimately concluded that her actions caused a tax loss of $274,090. In addition to the 24 months in prison, the defendant will also serve one year of supervised release.

Streater has also been ordered to pay $83,083 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. Additional details can be found here.
