This week, it was announced that a certified public accountant was sentenced to five years in prison in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. A jury convicted Carl Nicholson on February 8, 2019. Nicholson was convicted of conspiracy to defraud the United States as well as six counts of aiding in the preparation of false tax returns and four counts of filing false tax returns.
Court documents and evidence presented at trial show that Nicholson conspired with a client to falsely classify $740,000 of personal payments as business expenses and filed tax returns on the client’s behalf with the IRS. This occurred from 2012 to 2014. He was also found guilty of filing false personal income tax return from 2012 through 2015.
He was found guilty of falsely claiming expenses, failing to report embezzlement income, and under reporting the gain on the sale of his accounting firm. Further details have been made available here.
