On Friday, it was announced that a 29-year-old from New Orleans had been indicted for Theft of Government Funds. Elijah Charles Sorina is accused of continuing to receive Social Security Administration disability benefits after he claimed he was disabled and unable to work, despite working. The indictment claims that federal special agents concluded that Sorina began working for a local transportation company as a bus driver in 2014, after obtaining a Commercial Driver’s license.
The Social Security Administration alleges that Sorina obtained benefits of $19,897.00 that he was not entitled to from May 2014 until August of 2016. Sorina is accused of concealing his employment from the SSA. At this point in time, the defendant remains innocent, until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. If convicted, Sorina will face a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and three years of supervised release.
