On Tuesday, January 2, 2018, it was announced that a San Antonio, Texas consultant had been sentenced to prison for preparing false tax returns. Rodney Lyle Roberts was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison. In addition to the prison term, Roberts has been ordered to pay $143,590 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. He will also be required to serve one year of supervised release after completing his prison term.
Roberts pleaded guilty to four counts of making false tax returns on October 4, 2017. Court records show that Roberts prepared false and fraudulent income tax returns by failing to report his income for the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 tax years. At the time, Roberts was doing business in San Antonio and the surrounding areas providing software consultant work using the name Rod Roberts. Roberts claimed that he had received zero income. In reality, he had an income totaling more than $380,000 for the aforementioned tax years.
Roberts is currently free on bond. He will be required to surrender to federal authorities on or before February 6, 2018. Additional details can be found here.
