Saputo produces, markets and distributes an assortment of dairy products, include cheese and milk. The company is one of the top ten dairy processors in the world. This week, Saputo Cheese USA Inc. submitted a WARN notification with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. The letter explains that the company analyzes its United States manufacturing platform and implements initiatives to improve operation efficiencies. As a result, the company has reached the difficult decision to completely and permanently close its Fond du Lac, Wisconsin facility.
The facility is located at 45 East Scott Street. The company believes that the closure will take place no later than June 1, 2018. The age of the facility and the magnitude of likely capital investments required by the facility were cited as reasons for the closure. As a result of the impending closure, the company expects to permanently lay off roughly 102 hourly union employees and 18 non-union employees. The union employees are represented by the General Teamsters Union. The layoffs are expected to start on March 31, 2018 or within the fourteen-day period after that date.
